Benefits of Solo Travelling That’ll Make You Book a Flight Today

As a solo female traveller myself, I can say with confidence that there are few things as liberating as writing your own story.

While solo female travel may sound daunting, especially if you've never travelled alone before, the benefits are undeniable.

Solo Female Travel

Here are three main benefits of solo travel that will make you start planning your first trip today.

  • Your confidence will go through the roof: One of the main perks of solo travel is that it can boost your confidence. When you're on your own in a foreign place, you learn to rely on yourself and make decisions independently.

This can lead to a newfound sense of self-assurance and independence that carries over into other areas of your life.

  • You will grow as a person: Solo travel also offers ample opportunities for personal growth.

When you're on your own, you're forced to confront challenges and navigate unfamiliar situations. Through these experiences, you may discover new interests, learn new skills, and gain a better understanding of yourself and the world around you.

  • You will feel free and more flexible: Finally, solo travel offers unparalleled freedom and flexibility. When you're travelling alone, you can make your own schedule, choose your own destinations, and change your plans on a whim.

This allows you to fully embrace the spirit of adventure and go wherever the wind takes you.

While solo female travel may sound a bit scary at first, it's an incredibly rewarding experience that offers numerous benefits. Take the leap and see where the road takes you!

Solo Female Travel Concerns and How to Overcome Them

While solo female travel can be a life-changing experience, it's natural to have concerns about safety and loneliness.

Don't worry, as there are plenty of ways to address these concerns and ensure that your solo adventure is both safe and enjoyable.

Check out these two common concerns of solo female travel and some tips and tricks to overcome them:

  • Safety and well-being: Safety is often the primary concern for solo female travellers.

While it's essential to be vigilant and take precautions, it's also important not to let fear hold you back.

Research your destination thoroughly beforehand, and stay in well-lit, safe areas. It's also a good idea to carry a personal safety alarm or whistle and to let someone know your itinerary.

  • Loneliness: Another common concern of solo female travel is loneliness.

It's completely normal to feel lonely at times. That said, solo travel can also be an opportunity to connect with other travellers and locals.

Stay in hostels or Airbnb with friendly hosts, take group tours or join travel groups on social media to meet other like-minded travellers. You can also try new things and put yourself out there - this might help you form new friendships with locals or other travellers.

Choosing the Right Destination for Solo Female Travel

Choosing the ideal destination for solo female travel is crucial for ensuring that you have the time of your life! When deciding where to go, consider factors like safety, accessibility, and social atmosphere.

Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest

If you're looking for safe and easy solo female travel destinations in Europe, here are three great options:

  • Barcelona, Spain: Barcelona is a fabulous city for solo travellers thanks to its social atmosphere and abundance of meetups and events.

The city's lively nightlife scene is a great way to meet new people, and there's plenty to see and do during the day, from exploring Gaudi's architecture to strolling along the beach.

  • Lisbon, Portugal: Lisbon is a sunny, friendly, and interesting spot that's perfect for solo female travellers. The city's historic neighbourhoods are full of charming cafes, boutiques, and museums, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet other travellers or locals.

With its beautiful architecture, thermal baths, and vibrant nightlife, there's always something to see and do. The city is also home to many affordable hostels and Airbnbs, making it easy to meet other travellers and make new friends.

No matter where you choose to go, remember to stay safe, be open to new experiences, and embrace the spirit of adventure!

Planning Your First Solo Female Travel Adventure: Where to Start?

Planning solo female travel can be overwhelming, but with a few practical tips, you will become a pro today. Here are some easy steps to get started:

  • Choose your destination: Start by considering your budget, interests, and safety when selecting a destination. Do some research and make a list of places you'd like to visit.
  • Find cheap flights: Use flight search engines like Skyscanner or Google Flights to compare prices and find the cheapest flights. Be flexible with your travel dates and consider flying on weekdays to save money.
  • Join Facebook groups: Join local travel groups or expat groups on Facebook to connect with locals and get insider tips on events, activities, and places to visit.
  • Plan your itinerary: Make a rough plan of your itinerary, but leave plenty of room for spontaneity! Don't try to do too much in one day and take time to relax and explore.
  • Stay safe: Research local customs, dress modestly, and be aware of your surroundings. Carry a map (also download Maps on your phone), keep your valuables close, and trust your instincts.

If you are planning a solo trip to the United Arab Emirates or other Middle Eastern destinations, it's essential to be aware of cultural norms and etiquette. While the UAE is relatively liberal compared to other Middle Eastern countries, it's still vital to be respectful of local customs and traditions.

UAE is One of the Safest Solo Female Travel Destinations

For example, it's customary for women to dress modestly in public, covering their shoulders and knees. Always be mindful of public displays of affection, as they are not accepted in public.

In addition, the UAE has strict laws regarding alcohol consumption, drug use, and public behaviour. Educate yourself on these laws and regulations before your trip.

Packing for Your First Solo Trip

While I will write a more detailed guide on packing like a minimalist when I get ready for my trip to Italy, take a peep at these easy and practical tips to get you started:

  • Make a list: Create a packing list of essential items you need for your trip. This will help you stay organized and prevent you from overpacking.
  • Pack light: Packing in only a carry-on or a backpack can save you time and money. It's also more convenient as you don't have to wait at baggage claim or worry about lost luggage.
  • Bring versatile clothing: Pack clothing that can be worn in different ways and for different occasions. Stick to a neutral colour palette and mix and match your outfits. Packing a capsule wardrobe may be a lifesaver!
  • Use packing cubes: Packing cubes can help you stay organized and make it easier to find items in your luggage (packing cubes are also handy if airport security wants to check what you have in your suitcase, trust me on this one).
  • Remember the essentials: Pack items like your passport, travel documents, and any medications you need.

By following these simple tips, you can pack efficiently and stress-free for your solo female trip. And if you're interested in learning more about packing like a minimalist, stay patient, the guide is on its way!

My First Solo Trip Experience

My first solo travel experience wasn't exactly what you would expect. I flew to Malmo, Sweden back in 2018 to visit a friend, so technically it wasn't a solo trip. However, it was my first time going abroad by myself, and it was definitely a step towards my solo travel journey.

But the real solo female trip started with baby steps. I decided to go to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, which is only one hour away from where I live.

A Street in Belgrade, Serbia

I booked myself an Airbnb and stayed there for two nights.

The first night, I went out to eat by myself, feeling a bit awkward at first, but then I started feeling more comfortable in my skin.

On the second day, I met a few people from a "foreigners in Belgrade" Facebook group (always be mindful of who you are meeting up with!) and had a great time exploring the city with them.

When I came back home, I felt a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. I fell more deeply in love with my own presence and thoughts.

Solo travel allowed me to be more self-aware and present in the moment. It gave me a chance to step out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and learn about different cultures.

Since then, I've been on several solo trips, and each one has been a unique and enriching experience. Solo travel has taught me to embrace my independence and to trust myself.

It's given me the confidence to explore new places, meet new people, and try new things.

And while it can be super scary at first, the rewards are truly worth it. So, to all the solo female travellers out there, don't be afraid to take that first step, because who knows where it may lead you!

Hopefully, this guide on solo female travel was insightful and helpful.
