Are Barcelona Hostels Safe?

Are Barcelona hostels safe and if so, which are the best ones in the city? Here's what you need to know.

Not only are Barcelona hostels safe, but they are one of the best accommodation options for a solo female traveller!

In this detailed guide on Barcelona hostel accommodation, I’ll go through two of my favourite spots: The Black Swan Hostel in Barcelona and Coimpact Coliving.

I did some research and found two of the best Barcelona hostel accommodation options that are clean, convenient, social, close to the main sights, and most importantly, safe.

Here are the reviews for two of my favourite hostels you want to keep in mind on your next trip to the capital of Catalunya.

Black Swan Hostel Barcelona

Black Swan Hostel Barcelona

Who is it for? This hostel in Barcelona is ideal for younger people looking for a social atmosphere. It is not the best choice for digital nomads and remote workers, because I found that the hostel lacks a private “office” area.
Nevertheless, there are many lovely cafes around the hostel where you can get projects done.

What is the price? I paid a total of 172.41 euros for eight nights. That’s 21.60 euros per night. While this is not the most affordable hostel in Barcelona, it certainly is good value for what you get.

Is there privacy? Absolutely! I stayed in an 8-person female dorm and all of the beds had blackout curtains for privacy. While there was certainly some partying going on, this hostel allows you to be in your own bubble — if you want that of course.

Is it clean? Unfortunately, this wasn’t the cleanest hostel I have stayed at. I wish the bathrooms were nicer and larger.

Can I cook here? Yes, you can. The Black Swan hostel offers a large fridge for your stuff, and it has all the necessary amenities to cook your favourite food. I also enjoyed that there are daily “free dinners” that you can sign up for at the front desk.

Is the staff helpful? The staff is amazing and friendly. I want to give a huge shoutout to Santiago, the staff member at the reception who welcomed me when I arrived.

Are there any social events? Yes! The Black Swan Hostel offers a wide array of events from pub crawls to movie nights and free walking tours. All you need to do is check the reception and sign up. For example, sometimes, the hostel staff and guests prepare paella together for just 8 euros.

Is it safe? This hostel in Barcelona is safe, especially if you are a solo female traveller.

     Pros:

  • Social atmosphere

     Feels like home

     Can make friends easily

Cons:

Mainly Spanish-speaking guests (maybe this was just my experience)

     Hygiene could be better

     Lack of working space

Coimpact Coliving

Coimpact Coliving Barcelona

Who is it for? Coimpact Coliving is a hostel or coliving space in Barcelona city aimed towards professionals, working adults, and digital nomads. While there were younger generations staying here as well, I found that the vast majority of the crowd was around 30 years old and up.

You will enjoy Coimpact Coliving if you are looking for a safe hostel in Barcelona with high levels of privacy and comfort. It's true that Coimpact Coliving resembles a hostel at first glance.

However, I had one of the best nights of sleep of my life here, and I didn't have to whip out my earplugs. On the downside, there is no "party vibe" in this coliving space.

That said, people who are travelling and working on projects will love Coimpact Coliving. It has a lot of space for work, including a beautiful balcony and a neat creation room.

What is the price? This Barcelona coliving space rents out dorms for 21 euros. For eight nights, I paid a total of 172 euros. Compared to the Black Swan hostel, this is a fabulous price.

A bed in a shared dorm in both hostels adds up to 21 euros per night, but I found Coimpact Coliving more comfortable and peaceful. If I had to choose again, I would stay in the latter longer.

Is there privacy? Privacy is the number one thing I loved about this coliving space. You can sleep, work, and recharge your batteries here.

If you want, you can be social and talk to other digital nomads and travellers. However, if you don't want to, there is sufficient space in the coliving space to do your own thing. In a nutshell, this is not a crowded place.

However, I was here in early December, so maybe it is more packed in the spring and summer.

Is it clean? Coimpact Coliving is one of Barcelona's cleanest hostels. The staff cleaned the spaces daily.

Can I cook here? Yes, and you can let your imagination run loose. Compared to other hostels I've booked in the past that felt crowded and uncomfortable (especially when it comes to meal preparation time), Coimpact Coliving offers full leisure and comfort when it comes to cooking and baking.

You have tons of free spices and pasta at your disposal. Also, you get a cube with your room and bed number so you can store your food items without worrying that someone may snatch them.

Is the staff helpful? The staff at Coimpact Coliving felt like family. Everyone is smiling and super friendly.

Are there any social events? While this hostel in Barcelona is not the traditional hostel experience, there are some social events going on. However, don't expect crazy things here. You'll need to join a WhatsApp group to locate events.

Is it safe? This must be the safest hostel in Barcelona. That said, I always encourage keeping your belongings locked up and stored away from peering eyes — you never know what might happen.

Nevertheless, I could leave my laptop and phone unattended, and there were no problems. If you are fearful of hostel safety, you get a locker and a key where you can keep your valuables.

Pros:

Extremely clean, comfortable, and safe hostel in Barcelona.

     Feels like a warm hug!

A good option for networking with other remote workers

Cons:

Not as social as other hostels

Some people might not like the older crowd

There was no heating while I was there in December

So, are Barcelona hostels safe? Based on my personal experience of travelling to Barcelona as a solo female traveller, I'd say that the answer is YES. But, make sure that you are always conscious and aware of your surroundings.

Pickpockets and creeps are everywhere!

If you are looking for the best safe hostels in Barcelona, the Black Swan and Coimpact Coliving are fabulous affordable options.
