Couchsurfing 101: Essential Tips for Solo Female Travellers

Hi there fellow wanderluster!

As a 29-year-old woman who loves solo travel, I know how daunting it can be to navigate the world of accommodations. Between the high costs and safety concerns, it can be a real challenge to find affordable and secure places to stay when travelling abroad.

But I'll let you in on my little secret, and it's a website that helped me discover beautiful places, live like a local, meet amazing people, and save money. It's Couchsurfing.

If you're ready to explore new and exciting destinations while connecting with locals and staying safe, keep on reading. These women-friendly Couchsurfing tips will help you feel at ease and secure when staying at a "stranger's" home.

The Best Platform for Solo Travellers: What's Couchsurfing?

If you're like me and you want to ditch tourist traps and agencies, and you are seeking a more unique travel experience, Couchsurfing may be the answer.

This amazing platform is a fantastic way to get to know the local culture, make new friends, and have a truly one-of-a-kind experience of a lifetime.

But what's Couchsurfing?

In a nutshell, Couchsurfing is a community of travellers and locals who come together to share experiences and culture.

With Mary, a local I met in London

As a solo female traveller, you can search for hosts all around the world who are willing to offer a place to stay for free. It's not just about saving money on accommodation, though - Couchsurfing is so much more than that.

For instance, when you stay with a local host, you get the chance to see the city from their perspective.

Far took me to the Van Gogh Experience!

They can show you the hidden gems that only locals know about and introduce you to their friends and family. You'll get a glimpse into the local way of life and experience the culture in a way that you never could in a hotel or hostel.

And the best part? Couchsurfing is available all around the world! So no matter where your wanderlust takes you, you can always find a friendly local to host you and show you around.

Creating a Couchsurfing Profile: Hot Tips for Solo Travellers

When it comes to using Couchsurfing as a solo female traveller, creating a well-thought-out and informative profile can make a huge difference in finding the right host.

With Michelle in Lisbon

A good profile not only introduces you to potential hosts but also helps them to get to know you better, making it easier for them to decide if they want to have you as a guest.

Here are a few tips and tricks to make your profile stand out:
  • Add a few photos of yourself, your friends, and past travel experiences. It's a great way to show potential hosts what kind of person you are, and the kind of experiences you've had.
  • Make sure to avoid uploading photos that depict you showing too much skin, as these photos may convey the wrong message to future hosts.
  • Include some information about your hobbies, interests, and the reasons why you love to travel. This will help people get a sense of what you're like as a person and what you're looking for in a host.
  • Be honest and upfront about what you're looking for in a host. Are you interested in exploring the local nightlife, or do you prefer quieter evenings in? Perhaps you're not even interested in hanging out? Let your potential host know beforehand.
  • Verify your identity, as this also helps future hosts know that you are a real person and that you put effort into creating an interesting profile.

Finding Hosts: Every Solo Female Traveller Must Know These Tips

When searching for a host, make sure to also look for informative and welcoming profiles. A good host profile should include information about their interests, what they can offer you as a guest, and any house rules that you should be aware of.

With Mila in Oslo

Take the time to read through their profile thoroughly to make sure that you're a good match.

That said, one of the most important things to consider on Couchsurfing is the reviews. Not only are they helpful in providing an idea of what to expect, but some of them can also be downright hilarious!

Whether you're looking for a place to stay or you're considering hosting someone, taking the time to read through both positive and negative reviews can give you a good idea of what you're getting yourself into.

On Couchsurfing, hosts and surfers can leave reviews for each other after a stay. The reviewing process is simple, and you can rate the overall experience, cleanliness, communication, and more.

By reading through reviews, you can get a sense of the host's personality, communication style, and overall vibe of their home.

But it's not just hosts who can leave reviews. As a surfer, you can also leave a review for the host after your stay. This not only helps future surfers know what to expect, but it also lets hosts know how they can improve their hosting experience.

However, remember that not all reviews are created equal. Some may be overly positive or negative, while others may focus on small, insignificant details. But by skimming through reviews and taking note of any recurring themes, you can make a more informed decision about where to stay.

And don't forget to keep an eye out for those funny negative reviews!

They may not provide the most helpful information, but they can certainly make you laugh and give you some much-needed entertainment on your travels.

Safety Precautions for Solo Female Travellers Using Couchsurfing

As a solo female traveller, it's vital to take some precautions before accepting a host on Couchsurfing.

While the platform is a great way to connect with locals and have unique experiences, there are unfortunately some people who use it as a way to take advantage of travellers.

Some people register on the platform just like Tinder, and you might encounter creeps who have underlying motives to host you.

But it's not just the guests who can encounter "bad situations". Often, hosts may receive requests from strangers who may want to use them for free accommodation, free food, and worse.

To ensure everyone's safety, there are some things you can do on Couchsurfing:
  • Look for verified hosts who have a history of hosting guests, and check their references.
  • Read through their profiles carefully to make sure that their interests align with yours.
  • Always trust your instincts. If something feels off or uncomfortable, don't hesitate to say no or leave.
  • Set clear boundaries with your host and communicate your expectations.
  • Have a backup plan in case things don't work out with your host.
  • In case of an emergency, contact the Couchsurfing ambassador or the police.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut.

One of my most unpleasant experiences on Couchsurfing was during a solo trip to London. I had arranged to stay with a host who seemed friendly and accommodating.

However, things quickly turned uncomfortable when my host had too much to drink one evening. I felt uneasy, not knowing what might happen next.

Thankfully, I had a backup plan in place, like all solo female travellers should, so I made the decision to leave the next day.

Girls, always have a safety net when using Couchsurfing! While in most cases, it is a life-changing, amazing experience, sometimes, it just isn't. Make sure to always have extra money with you in case you need to leave immediately.

Couchsurfing Etiquette for Solo Female Travellers

Couchsurfing etiquette is essential to have a positive experience for both the host and the guest. As a guest, whether you're a solo male, a solo female traveller, a couple, or a family, it's important to be considerate of your host's time and space.

Remember that they are opening up their home to you and are often taking time out of their schedules to show you around and make you feel comfortable.

Here are some tips to be a good guest:
  • Communicate clearly with your host about your arrival and departure times
  • Respect their rules and lifestyle
  • Offer to help with household chores, cooking or cleaning
  • Bring a small gift or token of appreciation for your host (if your host drinks alcohol, wine is always a good idea! A fridge magnet, some cool local souvenirs, or anything else you can think of will do the trick)
  • Respect their privacy and personal space
  • Be open to getting to know your host and sharing your own culture
  • Leave the place as you found it or even cleaner!

It's also important to maintain a good relationship with your host, especially if you plan to stay with them for an extended period or in the future. Here are some tips for doing so:
  • Follow up with a thank you message or gift after you've left
  • Stay in touch through social media or email
  • Consider inviting your host to your home country
  • Write a positive review about your experience

Remember that Couchsurfing is a community built on trust, respect, and kindness. If we all follow these basic rules, it makes for a positive experience for everyone involved!

How to Use Couchsurfing as a Solo Female Traveller: Conclusion

Knowing how to use Couchsurfing safely as a solo female traveller is crucial in having an unforgettable travel experience. This platform is an amazing way to connect with locals, make new friends, and save money.

Despite the potential risks, it is a great way to experience local culture and make lasting memories. By taking precautions and being aware of your surroundings, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable stay with your host. To al ll the solo female travellers out there, don't be afraid to give Couchsurfing a try!

How to Visit Dubai from Belgrade Cheaply: A Solo Female Traveller's Guide to Saving Money in the UAE

Visiting Dubai for the first time can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially for a solo female traveller in her 20s.

As someone who recently visited the United Arab Emirates from the party capital of Serbia, Belgrade, I can attest that it's possible to have an incredible time on a budget while exploring this stunning Middle Eastern destination.

During my 10-day trip, I spent three days in Abu Dhabi before heading to Dubai for a week, and it was an unforgettable experience.

In this in-depth and personalized article, I'll provide an overview of how you too can visit Dubai cheaply and make the most of it as a solo female traveller.

From transportation tips and tricks and accommodation recommendations to yummy food and activities, I'll share my insights to help you plan an unforgettable trip in 2023.

Exchanging Money in the UAE: Avoid the Airport

While getting some dirhams as soon as you land may sound like a quick and effective way to fill your wallet with the local currency, it is not the best option out there.

When it comes to exchanging money in the UAE, it is important to do your research and find the best deal possible.

Me with the Burj Al Arab in the background

As you know, one option is to exchange money at the airport, but this is often the most expensive choice due to higher fees and lower exchange rates.

Instead, I recommend looking out for exchange offices or banks in the city, where you can often find better rates and lower fees.

Many hotels also offer currency exchange services, but again, be sure to compare rates before making a transaction.

Another tip is to avoid exchanging money in tourist areas, as these places often have higher fees and less favourable exchange rates.

Transportation Options in the UAE

As a solo female traveller from Serbia on a budget, finding the most affordable transportation options is key to making the most of your trip to Dubai.

Flying from Belgrade to Dubai directly can be quite expensive, with prices often exceeding €400 roundtrip. However, there is a more cost-effective option available that involves flying to Abu Dhabi first, then taking a bus to Dubai.

Dubai

Wizzair offers direct flights from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi that take approximately six hours and 40 minutes.

While the flight may not be the shortest route, it is significantly cheaper than flying directly to Dubai, with roundtrip tickets often costing less than €150.

From Abu Dhabi, you can take a bus to Dubai, which takes about one to two hours and costs around AED 25 (approximately €5). The bus is a comfortable and convenient option, with regular departures from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Dubai throughout the day.

Yes, it may take a bit longer to get to Dubai using this route, but you can save a significant amount of money on transportation costs. Plus, you'll have the chance to see another beautiful city in the UAE along the way.

How to Find Accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

As a young solo female traveller, finding affordable and safe accommodation options in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is crucial to having a successful trip.

Fortunately, safety is not an issue, as to my initial disbelief, the UAE is so safe that many locals leave their apartments unlocked! My Slavic brain was confused and I often told my hosts that this concept is unimaginable in the Balkans.

What hosts am I talking about? Well, during my visit to the Emirates, I found that using the Couchsurfing website was a fantastic way to stay with locals and save money on accommodation costs.

For reference, Couchsurfing is a social networking platform that connects travellers with locals who are willing to offer a free place to stay. While this option may not be for everyone, it is an excellent way to experience the local culture and make new friends.

However, it is important to note that there are potential risks associated with staying with strangers, so it's crucial to do your research, read reviews, and trust your instincts.

Fortunately, safety was not an issue in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Firstly, I stayed with a lovely Egyptian host in Abu Dhabi, Moustafa, and a Jordanian Couchsurfer, Marwan.

Now, I understand that Couchsurfing isn't everyone's cup of tea. If this is you, worry not, as there are plenty of other budget-friendly accommodation options in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Hostels are a great option for solo travellers on a tight budget, with prices ranging from AED 40-150 (approximately €8-30) per night. Many hostels offer private rooms as well as dorm-style accommodations, making it a great option for those who prefer more privacy.

If you prefer a bit more privacy, there are many affordable hotels and Airbnb options available in both cities. It's important to do your research and book accommodation close to bus stops and the metro to make getting around the city more convenient.

Where to Eat and Drink in Dubai

When it comes to food, Abu Dhabi and Dubai offer a vibrant and diverse culinary scene that can fit any budget. As a solo female traveller on a budget, I was able to sample many delicious and inexpensive meals during my trip.

Arabic food with my host, Marwan

The food culture in the UAE is heavily influenced by Arabic and Middle Eastern cuisines, with plenty of traditional dishes to try. Some must-try dishes include shawarma, hummus, tabbouleh, and kebabs.

When it comes to desserts, the UAE is famous for its sweet treats, such as baklava and kunafa. Kunafa is a cheese-filled pastry soaked in sweet syrup and is definitely worth trying during your visit.

If you've been to Turkey before, you might know it as Künefe.

What about coffee shops? Digital nomads, I haven't forgotten about you! If you're a digital nomad or need a comfortable place to work while enjoying some coffee and food, there are plenty of inexpensive cafes to check out in Dubai.

Some popular options include The Sum of Us, Comptoir 102, and Friends' Avenue Cafe. These cafes offer delicious food and drinks, free Wi-Fi, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for getting some work done. Alternatively, there's always a Starbucks peeping at every corner.

Things to Do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on a Budget (and Free!)

Dubai is a city with endless activities and sights to explore. Here are five must-see activities that I recommend for solo female travellers on a budget:

  • Explore Dubai Creek: Take a traditional abra (water taxi) across Dubai Creek and explore the markets and souks on the other side. This experience costs only AED 1 (less than €0.25) each way and is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.
  • Watch the Dubai Fountain Show: This free attraction offers a spectacular water and light show set to music. Shows take place every evening at the Dubai Mall and are a must-see.
  • Visit the Dubai Miracle Garden: This stunning garden features over 45 million flowers and is a perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of nature. Entry costs only AED 55 (around €11) and is worth the price.
Dubai Miracle Garden

  • Head to the Dubai Marina: Walk along the marina and enjoy the stunning views of the city skyline. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area, making it a great place to grab a bite to eat.

In Abu Dhabi, the top three sights to see are:

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: This stunning mosque is a must-see attraction in Abu Dhabi. Entry is free, but you will need to dress modestly and cover your head.

  • Louvre Abu Dhabi: This art museum is one of the most impressive in the world and is a must-visit for any art lover. Entry costs only AED 60 (around €12).
Louvre Abu Dhabi

  • Qasr Al Watan: This beautiful palace offers a glimpse into the UAE's cultural heritage and is a great way to learn about the country's history. Entry costs AED 60 (around €12).

To save money on activities in both cities, consider purchasing a city pass or bundle ticket. These passes offer discounts on popular attractions and can save you money in the long run.

Additionally, there are plenty of free and low-cost activities in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, such as visiting public beaches, hiking in the mountains, and exploring the local markets.

The Best Cost-Effective Transportation in Dubai

Dubai has an extensive public transportation system that includes buses and the metro. Taking the bus and metro is an inexpensive way to get around the city and can help solo female travellers on a budget save money.

The Dubai Metro has two lines that connect the city's major attractions and neighbourhoods, and tickets cost as little as AED 3 (less than €1) per ride.

Additionally, the buses are a great way to explore the city and offer routes to areas not covered by the metro. Fares for buses are also relatively cheap, with prices starting at AED 2 (around €0.50) per ride.

To avoid expensive taxis in Dubai, consider using ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem, which are usually cheaper than traditional taxis. Another option is to share a taxi with other travellers or locals, which can help split the cost.

If you plan on using public transportation frequently during your stay in Dubai, consider purchasing a Nol card. This rechargeable card can be used on both the metro and buses and offers discounts on fares.

On top of this, using the Silver Class option on the metro can save you money, as tickets are cheaper than the Gold Class option.

Cultural Tips in the UAE to Know as a Solo Female Traveller

As mentioned, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are safe for solo female travellers, and the UAE is known for being a secure country (in fact, one of the safest ones!). However, as always, it's important to take some precautions and be aware of cultural norms and guidelines.

As a solo female traveller in the UAE, it's important to dress modestly and respect the local culture.

This means covering your shoulders, and knees, and avoiding revealing clothing in public areas.

When visiting mosques, women are required to cover their heads and wear long, loose-fitting clothing. If you are unsure about what to wear, it's always best to err on the side of caution and dress more conservatively.

It's also important to be aware of cultural norms, such as the fact that public displays of affection are not permitted, and alcohol is only served in licensed venues.

All in all, always show respect to the culture, no matter where you go. :)

Visiting the UAE as a Solo Female Traveller: Conclusion

Visiting Abu Dhabi and Dubai was a dream come true for me as a solo female traveller.

As my first time in the Middle East, I was blown away by the beauty, culture, and hospitality of the people. From the stunning architecture to the delicious food and vibrant nightlife, there was always something new and exciting to discover.

I can't wait to explore more of this fascinating region. The warmth and kindness of the people I met, combined with the rich history and stunning landscapes, have left a lasting impression on me.

I highly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai to do so, and to keep an open mind and heart to fully embrace the experience.
