Visiting Dubai for the first time can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially for a solo female traveller in her 20s.
As someone who recently visited the United Arab Emirates from the party capital of Serbia, Belgrade, I can attest that it's possible to have an incredible time on a budget while exploring this stunning Middle Eastern destination.
During my 10-day trip, I spent three days in Abu Dhabi before heading to Dubai for a week, and it was an unforgettable experience.
In this in-depth and personalized article, I'll provide an overview of how you too can visit Dubai cheaply and make the most of it as a solo female traveller.
From transportation tips and tricks and accommodation recommendations to yummy food and activities, I'll share my insights to help you plan an unforgettable trip in 2023.
Exchanging Money in the UAE: Avoid the Airport
While getting some dirhams as soon as you land may sound like a quick and effective way to fill your wallet with the local currency, it is not the best option out there.
When it comes to exchanging money in the UAE, it is important to do your research and find the best deal possible.

As you know, one option is to exchange money at the airport, but this is often the most expensive choice due to higher fees and lower exchange rates.
Instead, I recommend looking out for exchange offices or banks in the city, where you can often find better rates and lower fees.
Many hotels also offer currency exchange services, but again, be sure to compare rates before making a transaction.
Another tip is to avoid exchanging money in tourist areas, as these places often have higher fees and less favourable exchange rates.
Transportation Options in the UAE
As a solo female traveller from Serbia on a budget, finding the most affordable transportation options is key to making the most of your trip to Dubai.
Flying from Belgrade to Dubai directly can be quite expensive, with prices often exceeding €400 roundtrip. However, there is a more cost-effective option available that involves flying to Abu Dhabi first, then taking a bus to Dubai.

Dubai |
Wizzair offers direct flights from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi that take approximately six hours and 40 minutes.
While the flight may not be the shortest route, it is significantly cheaper than flying directly to Dubai, with roundtrip tickets often costing less than €150.
From Abu Dhabi, you can take a bus to Dubai, which takes about one to two hours and costs around AED 25 (approximately €5). The bus is a comfortable and convenient option, with regular departures from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Dubai throughout the day.
Yes, it may take a bit longer to get to Dubai using this route, but you can save a significant amount of money on transportation costs. Plus, you'll have the chance to see another beautiful city in the UAE along the way.
How to Find Accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
As a young solo female traveller, finding affordable and safe accommodation options in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is crucial to having a successful trip.
Fortunately, safety is not an issue, as to my initial disbelief, the UAE is so safe that many locals leave their apartments unlocked! My Slavic brain was confused and I often told my hosts that this concept is unimaginable in the Balkans.
What hosts am I talking about? Well, during my visit to the Emirates, I found that using the Couchsurfing website was a fantastic way to stay with locals and save money on accommodation costs.
For reference, Couchsurfing is a social networking platform that connects travellers with locals who are willing to offer a free place to stay. While this option may not be for everyone, it is an excellent way to experience the local culture and make new friends.
However, it is important to note that there are potential risks associated with staying with strangers, so it's crucial to do your research, read reviews, and trust your instincts.
Fortunately, safety was not an issue in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Firstly, I stayed with a lovely Egyptian host in Abu Dhabi, Moustafa, and a Jordanian Couchsurfer, Marwan.
Now, I understand that Couchsurfing isn't everyone's cup of tea. If this is you, worry not, as there are plenty of other budget-friendly accommodation options in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Hostels are a great option for solo travellers on a tight budget, with prices ranging from AED 40-150 (approximately €8-30) per night. Many hostels offer private rooms as well as dorm-style accommodations, making it a great option for those who prefer more privacy.
If you prefer a bit more privacy, there are many affordable hotels and Airbnb options available in both cities. It's important to do your research and book accommodation close to bus stops and the metro to make getting around the city more convenient.
Where to Eat and Drink in Dubai
When it comes to food, Abu Dhabi and Dubai offer a vibrant and diverse culinary scene that can fit any budget. As a solo female traveller on a budget, I was able to sample many delicious and inexpensive meals during my trip.

The food culture in the UAE is heavily influenced by Arabic and Middle Eastern cuisines, with plenty of traditional dishes to try. Some must-try dishes include shawarma, hummus, tabbouleh, and kebabs.
When it comes to desserts, the UAE is famous for its sweet treats, such as baklava and kunafa. Kunafa is a cheese-filled pastry soaked in sweet syrup and is definitely worth trying during your visit.
If you've been to Turkey before, you might know it as Künefe.
What about coffee shops? Digital nomads, I haven't forgotten about you! If you're a digital nomad or need a comfortable place to work while enjoying some coffee and food, there are plenty of inexpensive cafes to check out in Dubai.
Some popular options include The Sum of Us, Comptoir 102, and Friends' Avenue Cafe. These cafes offer delicious food and drinks, free Wi-Fi, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for getting some work done. Alternatively, there's always a Starbucks peeping at every corner.
Things to Do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on a Budget (and Free!)
Dubai is a city with endless activities and sights to explore. Here are five must-see activities that I recommend for solo female travellers on a budget:
- Explore Dubai Creek: Take a traditional abra (water taxi) across Dubai Creek and explore the markets and souks on the other side. This experience costs only AED 1 (less than €0.25) each way and is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.
- Watch the Dubai Fountain Show: This free attraction offers a spectacular water and light show set to music. Shows take place every evening at the Dubai Mall and are a must-see.
- Visit the Dubai Miracle Garden: This stunning garden features over 45 million flowers and is a perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of nature. Entry costs only AED 55 (around €11) and is worth the price.

Additionally, there are plenty of free and low-cost activities in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, such as visiting public beaches, hiking in the mountains, and exploring the local markets.
The Best Cost-Effective Transportation in Dubai
Dubai has an extensive public transportation system that includes buses and the metro. Taking the bus and metro is an inexpensive way to get around the city and can help solo female travellers on a budget save money.
The Dubai Metro has two lines that connect the city's major attractions and neighbourhoods, and tickets cost as little as AED 3 (less than €1) per ride.
Additionally, the buses are a great way to explore the city and offer routes to areas not covered by the metro. Fares for buses are also relatively cheap, with prices starting at AED 2 (around €0.50) per ride.
To avoid expensive taxis in Dubai, consider using ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem, which are usually cheaper than traditional taxis. Another option is to share a taxi with other travellers or locals, which can help split the cost.
If you plan on using public transportation frequently during your stay in Dubai, consider purchasing a Nol card. This rechargeable card can be used on both the metro and buses and offers discounts on fares.
On top of this, using the Silver Class option on the metro can save you money, as tickets are cheaper than the Gold Class option.
Cultural Tips in the UAE to Know as a Solo Female Traveller
As mentioned, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are safe for solo female travellers, and the UAE is known for being a secure country (in fact, one of the safest ones!). However, as always, it's important to take some precautions and be aware of cultural norms and guidelines.
As a solo female traveller in the UAE, it's important to dress modestly and respect the local culture.
This means covering your shoulders, and knees, and avoiding revealing clothing in public areas.
When visiting mosques, women are required to cover their heads and wear long, loose-fitting clothing. If you are unsure about what to wear, it's always best to err on the side of caution and dress more conservatively.
It's also important to be aware of cultural norms, such as the fact that public displays of affection are not permitted, and alcohol is only served in licensed venues.
All in all, always show respect to the culture, no matter where you go. :)
Visiting the UAE as a Solo Female Traveller: Conclusion
Visiting Abu Dhabi and Dubai was a dream come true for me as a solo female traveller.
As my first time in the Middle East, I was blown away by the beauty, culture, and hospitality of the people. From the stunning architecture to the delicious food and vibrant nightlife, there was always something new and exciting to discover.
I can't wait to explore more of this fascinating region. The warmth and kindness of the people I met, combined with the rich history and stunning landscapes, have left a lasting impression on me.
